Change Password for Keychain "Local Items"...

Deleting and recreating the keychain to reset it is not the only way to repair a broken Local Items keychain!

If your Mac keeps asking for the Local Items keychain password, the keychain password might have somehow gotten out of sync with your Mac user account password. This could happen due to complications during password change for network accounts managed through Active Directory.

Before OS X El Capitan, this issue could be resolved by performing Keychain First Aid.

Unfortunately, since OS X El Capitan, Apple removed the Keychain First Aid option from the Keychain Access app, leaving users without a clear solution when they encounter issues with the Local Items keychain. When user attempts to remedy the solution by changing the Local Items keychain password as one would if the issue occurs to the login keychain, the option to Change Password for Keychain "Local Items" is greyed out. This leads to most online resources and technicians to conclude that deleting and recreating the keychain is the only solution.

But you do not need to do that!

The following steps should allow you to change the Local Items keychain password, provided that you know your old password.

  1. Restart your Mac.
  2. When prompted to enter the password for the "Local Items" keychain, click on Cancel and do not enter your password. Note: you may be prompted multiple time and need to click on Cancel multiple times.
  3. Open up Keychain Access (you can look for it via Spotlight).
  4. Lock the "login" keychain (yes, the "login" keychain).
  5. Unlock the "login" keychain.
  6. After unlocking the "login" keychain, you should now be prompted to change the password for the "Local Items" keychain. Change the password to match your user account password.
